With a network to the physics world championship

Young physicists from Löbau put their talent to the test. The HSZG provides support.

In February of this year, the ten best participants in the GYPT (German Young Physicists Tournament) were selected in Bad Honnef, North Rhine-Westphalia. A month later, the national team consisting of five members was nominated in a workshop at the University of Ulm.

After the team C4LQL8T3D (pronounced: calculated) with Fabian Bartuschk (18), Paul Linke (18) and Christoph Seibt (17) from Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in Löbau took silver at the GYPT, Fabian and Paul were nominated for the workshop in Ulm due to their outstanding individual performances and Paul Linke can now look forward to the International Young Physicists Tournament (IYPT) in Beijing.

The competition revolves around around 17 tasks that have to be completed. The results must then be presented as convincingly as possible to a jury and defended in a subsequent discussion. One of the tasks deals with the so-called "bottom flip", another with the burning of floating candles. In addition to theoretical explanations of these physical phenomena, experimental investigations are of the utmost importance. In addition to other scientific institutions, the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences from the Department of High Voltage Technology and Theoretical Electrical Engineering was able to provide a high-speed camera with a recording rate of 20,000 images/s and a thermal imaging camera.

We wish Paul Linke all the best and every success at the IYPT, which will take place in Beijing, China, from July 19 to 26, 2018.
